ArtFence @ Vinal Avenue

ArtBeat 2020 took to the neighborhoods this summer when Mayor Joe cancelled all city events due to COVID-19. Inspired by ArtBeat 2020’s theme of CHANCE, I created an installation on the Growing Center’s Vinal Avenue fence which explores the role that chance plays in POLLINATION. First, I made giant frames of pollinators out of willow branches which I had found––by chance––bundled up in the Growing Center’s compost area. A volunteer had asked me if he could take some home to try bending them into furniture, and well, I borrowed his idea––thanks, Dave! Someone then told me to soak them in water for a couple of days, so I put them in a kiddie pool in my yard, and after a few days, I started bending them into shapes. This is what started to emerge ~

Next, I asked friends and neighbors if they wanted to help cover them with fabric, and another element of chance was added to the process as each person created their own unique pollinator. Here are a few mounted on the Center’s fence ~

So when you get a chance, stop by the Growing Center and check out our ArtBeat 2020 installation. It has lots of interesting facts about POLLINATION & CHANCE displayed on placards throughout the installation. And if you would like to see some REAL POLLINATORS come visit our special Pollination Garden, which is in full bloom now, during our OPEN HOURS on Tuesdays from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and on Saturdays from 10:30am to 12:30pm. The latest BUZZ from Liza!
