For more than a quarter century, the Growing Center has been dedicated to engaging the full population of Somerville, with a focus on children and youth, in providing an open and welcoming green space dedicated to nature education, urban agriculture, and community engagement.
In these uncertain times, our plan is still to continue that mission even while facing the health challenges of COVID-19 and social distancing measures which, while necessary, make it difficult to be open for programming. To help support our work, we are happy to report that we've been approached by a generous anonymous donor who has agreed to donate $500 for the month of April––a reaffirmation of spring and new growth!––with the caveat that we raise an additional $500 in matching funds this month. We can literally double our growth with the help of our friends and neighbors!
Food security is an acute issue that many of our friends and neighbors here in Somerville now face. We want to be a part of the solution. Our plans for this year include continuing a strong focus on urban agriculture. We're planning to use small teams of our dedicated volunteer corps––adhering to recommended public safety guidelines––to grow nutrient-rich produce in our raised beds and other gardening areas. This produce will then be distributed via area food security partners this season. Funds raised now will support ongoing coordination and communication efforts to ensure the Growing Center can adapt now, as well as be ready to serve the community in the future.
We have a wonderful group of friends and supporters, and we welcome your help at any level you can give. Can you donate $5? Or $50? And most importantly, can you share your love for the Somerville Community Growing Center with friends, family, and your social networks? Every little bit counts.
