Seasonal Part-Time Garden Educator, Somerville Community Growing Center


The Somerville Community Growing Center is a 27-year-old community garden space run primarily by volunteers; it is a space for gathering, learning, and celebrating. Its long history includes building local community through coordinating ecological and multicultural educational programs and events.

Through a grant the YMCA received for summer 2021, which the Growing Center supported, the garden will host children/youth who attend the YMCA and PHA/YMCA summer camp one day a week.

Through a connection to Land, STEM, and experiential learning, we hope to provide a focus on equity and create learning opportunities that are steeped in creativity, kindness, and empathy.

Description of the position
Limited part-time, 8-9 hours per week, experienced Garden Educator for ages 7-12 in a one-day-a-week, all-outdoor program at the Somerville Community Growing Center, starting July 2021-August 24th. (Day has already been chosen, Thursday). Part-time seasonal position, independent contractor with the Friends of the Community Growing Center.

Responsibilities

  • Support children/youth well-being, health, and safety

  • Be outdoors all day one day a week

  • Support inquiry and child/youth-led learning

  • Plan and implement garden-based STEM curriculum and activities with a focus on place-based and project-based learning

  • Communicate effectively with YMCA support staff, staff at the Growing Center, and directors of YMCA/PHA

  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively with another co-lead teacher

  • Do observation posts/weekly write-up of activities and share with partners

  • Write-up and submit photos (that are approved by YMCA) to be submitted to the volunteer coordinator at the Growing Center


Qualifications

  • Experience in Environmental or Garden Education with children and youth

  • Experience working with diverse group of children and youth, ages 7-12

  • Experience working with community that is diverse and bilingual

  • A commitment to anti-racism education and anti-bias work personally and professionally

  • Ability to be flexible on the job

  • Excellent communication skills


Salary and benefits
$18-$22 per hour, based on experience
