JUNE:

Art Fence: The Power of Flowers

During the month of June on the Vinal Avenue Fence

We will feature interviews with local residents about their unique relationships with flowers.

Music in the Garden Series

Thursday, June 17, 6-7:30 pm

Venture out to the Somerville Community Growing Center on select Thursday evenings in June and July for live music! Dates are 6-7:30pm on June 3 and 17, and July 1, 15, and 29 (raindates will be on alternative weeks, as predicted rain will cancel by mid-day).

Experience a mix of jazz with Latin flavors, provided by professional musicians Mark Torgerson and David Rumpler, with invited musical guests throughout the summer. In addition to the carpentry and construction experience that Mark provides the Center as a volunteer, he has been part of the Boston and NE music scene for decades as lead guitar with African and Afro-Latin world music bands. David Rumpler adds his jazz and Latin keyboard talents, with a special love of Brazilian styles.

Spread your blanket or grab a chair, bring your own picnic, explore the native pollinator garden or the food and herb beds—and enjoy a summer serenade!

Solstice Celebration: Climate Connections

Saturday, June 19, 2-4pm

Join us for our Solstice Celebration in the garden. You can meet with other local people and groups interested in addressing climate change through a range of approaches and practices.

Come learn about organizations active in climate justice, solar energy options, making compost tea to help street trees thrive to counter heat island effects—and more! If you or your organization are interested in participating or have questions, please contact Lisa at lisa@thegrowingcenter.org

Saturday, June 19, 4-7pm Solstice Garden Work Session in collaboration with Groundwork Somerville. After the Solstice Celebration, you are invited to take part in a work day at the Growing Center as a part of Groundwork Somerville's 2021 Somerville Cleaning and Greening project. Volunteers must sign up in advance. Please go here to learn more and sign up to take part.

The Growing Center prioritizes the health and well-being of our volunteers and visitors. We will be observing a city-approved Health and Safety Plan, which includes site capacity limits. If you are fully vaccinated, face coverings or masks are not required. The CDC does recommend that people still wear masks in public settings, at events and gatherings, and anywhere they will be around others who are not fully fascinated or unknown vaccine status. If you are not fully vaccinated, face coverings or masks are recommended to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to other people.
