Growing Center Volunteer Orientation

The Growing Center is run and maintained by a volunteer organization called the Friends of the Community Growing Center. We have a number of volunteer teams and committees that need leadership and members, including Archives & History, Compost Caretakers, Event Support, Farmers Market, Lawn & Labyrinth Care, Playgroup, Publicity and Outreach, Watering Angels, Work Day Leadership, Children and Nature Initiative, Board of Directors, Fundraising, Master Planning, and Program Planning Committee. The way to get started is to attend a volunteer orientation. The orientation usually lasts approximately 75 minutes or so, depending on the number of questions. Orientations will be offered monthly May through September.
The Growing Center will be open at 6 pm. Sign in from 6-6:20 pm. The plan to start promptly at 6:30 pm and finish by 7:45 pm. |

Spring Garden Day
Join our 18th annual spring kick-off event to celebrate spring, gardening and community. Free seeds, seedling, garden supplies exchange-bring along any extras you have to share with other gardeners. Come help Kagen Weeks of Hive at Your Home paint bee hives and learn about the important role of bees from 9-11 am. Give your input on design concepts to create more space for growing food as part of the Center's Master Planning process. Enjoy traditional Morris dances performed by Red Herring and Pipe Dreams teams. Join the annual Maypole Dance, an agrarian ritual to encourage a fertile, productive season in the gardens of Somerville.

Somerville Open Studios
Saturday May 5 and Sunday May 6 from noon to 6 pm
The Growing Center is serving as community space for the 14th Annual Somerville Open Studios, a free showcase for the arts taking place throughout Somerville. We'll have nature and environmentally themed artwork from members of the Somerville Community Growing Center Artist's Collaborative:

Aileen Bellwood - Forest Karma Soap Co. - Botanical olive oil soaps
Helen Brown - Small mixed media paintings
Roxanne Camanyag - Mixed media wood collages
Nicole Mongeon - Mongella - Handcrafted accessories, jewelry & apparel
Angela Robins - Fungi cartoons & cards
From 2 pm-5:30 pm, we'll also have some children's activities, including soil art and repurposed bamboo chopstick crafts.

A Somerville Porchfest Event!
Mike Rivard (Club D'Elf), Eric Freeman (Honey Circuit) & Allison Stamiris (Agbekor) combine the drums & rhythms of West Africa - primarily Mali, Guinea & Ghana - with the sound of the Moroccan sintir, a 3-stringed bass lute made of camel skin and used by the Gnawa people in their trance ceremonies. Fusing the ancient with the contemporary, the sound of the group is trance-like and mesmerizing with a groove that captivates. Rhythms such as Cha'abi, Sungurubani and Take played on kalimba, balafon, sabar drum & djun djun, mesh with deep bass grooves on the sintir to inspire ecstatic dancing. www.clubdelf.com/
